Welcome to another video about great riffs from great bands. This time King's X is the subject and we'll be taking a look at 3 killer riffs, all in drop D tuning from their early albums.
Ty Tabor is a fantastic guitarist and has written some of the coolest riffs in hard rock history in my opinion. A big part of the early King's X sound was the use of drop D tuning, and this was before grunge hit. In that sense King's X were somewhat pioneers in experimental tunings. But it was not just drop D to be heavier--they tuned down for other creative reasons-- as you'll discover for yourself when studying the 3 riffs on offer here.
First up is "It's Love." This was a hit for the band and features 3 great guitar parts linking the intro, verse and chorus sections. We'll take a look at all 3 parts here...so it's a bit like getting 3 riffs for the price of one!
Next up is "Black Flag." This is a very simple riff but super catchy. It also uses something Ty does a lot...droning open strings, which you see at the end of the riff with the open G string.
Finally, the masterful riff to "Lost In Germany." It's hard to find words to describe how cool this riff is! The use of open strings, slides and an interesting rhythmic placement of notes makes this mesmerizing. Check it out!
Again all three of these tunes use drop D tuning.
Thanks to Ty Tabor, Dug Pinnick and Jerry Gaskill for all the amazing riffs and records! If you are new to Kings X I'd recommend checking out the following albums:
* Dogman
*Gretchen Goes To Nebraska
*King's X (s/t)
*Faith, Hope, Love
*Out of the Silent Planet
Rock on!
