The volcano crater lake had enormous lily pads with white flowers that perfumed the air with a pineapple scent. I did not dare approach the lake as I knew anaconda resided in it.

wait, so the water lillies are always born as females, then an insect is caught in it which transfers the pollens to it and then the flower becomes and male the other day and produces its own pollens which the insect carries away..

So if I interpret this correctly, all lilies are born female and are therefore pollinated by last year’s males (who then die back to seed and re-germinate). I guess they don’t care about being unfashionable and “wearing” things from last season. :-)

Nature has its way to conserve water from evaporation. We humans are using plastic balls for it even when nature has provided its own solution.
