Never thought I'd see an instrument that a euphonium could make fun of

As a Mexican I can confirm that alto horns give a nice touch to our music such as banda music or sinaloense. The alto horn always sounds good with the tuba/sousaphone. It’s the perfect combo. I am a sousaphone player.

In Spain these instruments have been traditionally called "onnoven". Although the origin of this name is not clear, it's probably caused by a bad translation of "horn in Eb" (the "h" is not pronounced in Spanish). Nowadays it's really hard to find them in our wind/concert bands, maybe by the absence of specific repertoire

In México is called "Charcheta", or in english it doesn't mean anything but you can translate as "Charchet"
But it's real spanish name is "Saxor".

Fun fact: F. E. Olds made alto horns in the key of F! Apparently you could get a W shaped replacement main tuning slide that would lower it to Eb. They also have front pistons instead of top action, as I prefer.

As a Greek, you can find these horns in every single municipality-owned marching band. They are used to play the drum parts, but they sound pretty good when they get something to play.

My valve trombone was gifted by my uncle and he used to be in a Mexican band, when i got it i was confused for a while because i play baritone and the valve configuration where not the same it took me 4 hours to realize it was on the key of C

I played this for a short time in my elementary school band. The teacher called it an E flat horn. I soon graduated to the E flat tuba.

The Mexican/Latin bands that use these call them “Charcheta”. There are usually 2-3 players on them in the section, often playing the root, 3rd, and 5th of the chord, in various inversions. In fast 3/4 tunes, they produce a frenetic and absolutely constant “Boop-Boop, Boop-Boop, Boop-Boop, Boop-Boop!!” on beats 2 and 3!

Interesting. In Eastern Europe we call these “Alto Horn”. A tenor horn is in Bb, like the Baritone and Euphonium, but a slightly different shape.
