Dig into the 4 biggest existential risks that threaten the survival of humanity, and explore how we can safeguard our future.

--

With the invention of the atomic bomb, humanity gained the power to destroy itself for the first time in our history. Since then, our risk of either extinction or the collapse of civilization has steadily increased. Just how likely are we to destroy ourselves? And what poses the greatest threat to our survival? Dig into four existential threats and explore how we can safeguard our future.

"If it isn't perfectly aligned with human values." I think humanity is not perfectly aligned with human values, no wonder AI is having a hard time getting there.

Focusing on the greatest problems is a great way to take your mind off one’s own lesser problems. Thanks, Ted-Ed!

It's terrifying to know that we gleefully elect leaders that are supremely self-interested and have little regard for the future of humanity.

the fact that all the bystanders were clapping in each scenario gave me horrified shivers down my spine. the accuracy is unreal.

Fearing the thought of extinction is a great excuse to take a sick day off work 👍

I'd say that one of Humanity's greatest threat is Humanity itself

The diversity of the concepts that this channel has is simply amazing. Always one of my Fav channels. But the thing that makes me sad is you are not continuing History on trail series like the other concepts are done. Please make sure about that.

Real question though: Why is this lady presenting humanity’s greatest weaknesses to a ship full of aliens?
_There is a traitor in our midst._

"Because most of the risk is from human action, and it's within human control."

We future of humanity lies in our hands. We can destroy it if we want to, but we can also save it. The choice is ours.

Not trying to be picky, but, TED-Ed videos have a very important educational & informative purpose. Having a T-Rex eating a human @ 1:20 is a bit misleading, especially for children that might not get the joke. Dinosaurs & humans never coexisted, EXCLUDING CHICKENS.

WOW! Just wow
Ted ed knows how to leave us both scared and amused at the same time
Its absolutely true that it highly depends on our choices
It reminds me so much about various episodes of Doraemon about extinction of humans and take over by AI 😭

Wonderful video. My grandfather worked for the Amour Research Foundation on a feasibility study to determine whether the United States could detonate a nuclear bomb on the surface of the moon. I believe he also studied the effect of radiation fallout on the ionsphere, so I can appreicate the topic.
