Explaining the Pioneer Banlist - Part 3

In this series, we go over the pioneer banlist and explain why all the cards were banned. Today, we’re only covering one specific banlist that banned a total of 5 cards in the format, a relatively high number in comparison to most banlists. Specifically, we’ll be talking about every card banned on the February 2021 banlist.

Important note on Alchemy 3feri: its static ability is not literally the same as the printed one - it's the Grand Abolisher text, which accomplishes the same thing as the original on the turn of 3feri's controller, but at least allows the opponent to do instant stuff during their own turn.

the narcomoeba/creeping chill/prized amalgam combo is seeing play in timeless right now! they just use insane, regular mill cards like glimpse the unknowable

The Alchemy version of Teferi static ability is different. It says opponents cannnot cast spells during your turn. That is weaker than all spells at socrery speed. Combat tricks even on your turn do NOT work with Teferi out, but do work with the Alchemy version.

And the nerfed version doesn't block free spells or instants on your turns. Truth being told, with so many channel-like abilities this days on Pioneer, you can kill Teferi on instant speed without playing spells.

Pioneer is a format I've really been getting into watching recently, it's such a strange format because it's midrange but also we just combo kill you sometimes? It's great

*Highly* disagree that Fable of the Mirror Breaker is “around the same power level as Teferi”; powerful card, but imo not even close. Fable is a very good midrange card that smooths out your own curve and doesn’t block your opponents from doing anything; Teferi, meanwhile, insta-wins some match-ups unless you draw/have an answer right away, and can lock your opponent out of playing spells with instant-speed Thoughtseize effects stripping them out of your hand right after your draw step.

Blazing shoal probably is still not worth unbanning for the same reason tibalt's trickery wouldn't be, the random turn 2 kills would just be unfun to play against
