I love the Rest is History, I think Dominic proved tonight that a very sophisticated understanding of history is so crucial for understanding the present. He was more cogent than any of the other analysts and with less words required - and that’s saying something as I’m a fan of everyone on the panel.

I watched the whole stream and Dominic was a cut above the whole night.

He offered a lot more insight than anyone else on the panel which was surprising considering Stewart’s and Campbell’s political career, it my view it shows that these career politicians/civil servants really live in a bubble.

He was also the only one offering a balanced discussion about both candidates instead of repeating the same lines we hear everyday from the mainstream, very impressive display and I am proud to say I have bitten the bullet and finally became one of his Wangs.

Alistair Campbell’s response to Sandbrook’s analysis is highly amusing. The historian politely points out what Stewart and Campbell continuously fail to realise about ordinary people which is why they end up on the losing side so often. But rather than admit his own shortcomings, Campbell responds how amazing Tony Blair was. And we all know that whenever Campbell refers to Blair, he really means himself.

Dominic is absolutely right. Intellectuals project their own way of thinking about politics onto Joe Six-Pack. I am a university professor. When I want to know what's going on in my country before an election, I set up a meeting with my two brothers and my sister, who are not highly educated but are honest workers who have to provide for their families, my nephews and their girlfriends, and sometimes their neighbors, and we talk about politics, sports, and cars. I don't read the NYT editorials or op-eds. The vast majority of elites, historians, political scientists, economists don't understand ordinary men and women.

Completely agreed when Dominic said this. As a Politics graduate, one of the first things you're made aware of is how little the public really think or talk about politics. 'Public Opinion' by Walter Lippmann made this the basis of his arguments in his seminal text. It's why campaigning is so important and so difficult to get right, and how very often politically-attuned people get things wrong.
