I think weve all seen guardrail fatalities. Those accidents on the side of the road - I used to look real close, riding by as a kid, and sometimes the rail had stabbed or sliced right through the drivers seat. There's a stretch of 101 that kills drivers all the time, especially truck drivers, and the most vivid crash I saw there was when a truck in a relatively gentle(but fast) turn had slid into a shallow ditch, partially turned over into the ditch, impaled on the guardrail. It wouldve been a nonfatal crash with surprisingly low damage for a turnover, but instead the driver practically exploded.

I feel like most of safety for transportation is saftey theater. The safer cars and car infrastructure feel, the more dangerous it is for everyone. Thank you for what you do

The reason these still exist is that the federal highway system doesn't require the removal of replacement of outdated systems unless they are damaged or destroyed. The systems from the 1960s were designed to stop a car, not protect the driver.
