Imagine paying $10, 000 for a mollusc's tonsil stone.

I wish we could price pearls by the thickness of the nacre. That would make them worthwhile to me.

If the pearl was created by the oyster all by itself, I could see it being $10k, but it just seems odd to put such a price on a pearl that's mostly made of a calcium ball.

I like the little ‘spit up’ pearls…. Beautiful colours and different shapes seem so much more attractive

I actually prefer pearls with slight defects on it. Because it shows, it IS a pearl. When the pearl is too perfect, it actually looks like a plastic bead

Me walking out of the pearl fishery with a cartoonishly large bump in my mouth:

Pearls produced in this way. Feels like a gold plated necklace

A whopping 18mm*

17.95mm of it being the core worth approximately 15 cents

Inserting giant balls to get a pseudo-pearl and amazed that you get almost the same size out and its "$10k"

It’s like paying $10000 for a kidney stone

I’ve watched this so many times on different occasions. Really enjoyed learning about this

The difference between a $1 and a $10, 000 pearl is the sucker that you con into buying a round rock for that much.

It’s like an alien implanting a pebble into your kidney to grow a kidney stone.

I remember my family going to a place where they made a lot of pearls. Bought quite a few of the cheap ones (even cheaper locally than bought back home since they weren’t going to bother exporting those, so large supply compared to local demand. Kind of like buying slightly deformed vegetables at a farm) and once they were made into necklaces they looked insanely good. You’d have to plant your face into the person’s chest to check and see the Pearls’ blemishes.
