French election special programme: Exit poll shows far-right National Rally in third place

Voters have gone to the polls for the second time in France in crucial parliamentary run-off elections that threaten political deadlock.

France's far-right National Rally (RN) party has been beaten into third place in France's parliamentary election, according to exit polls from BFM.

The left-wing coalition New Popular Front is expected to take between 172-205 seats.

In a huge surprise, Emmanuel Macron's centrist alliance Ensemble is expected to receive around 150-175 seats.

Sky's Yalda Hakim will be live in Paris from 7pm for all the reaction and analysis as the polls close.

Ouf! as they say - thank goodness we can all breathe again here in France after holding our breath so long. Yes they will squabble amongst themselves but at least debate is still open and the people have a voice again. Here as in my sister country Poland sense has prevailed and the people have spoken.

I'm surprised, but it seems Macron's instincts aren't totally off...

The only fly in the ointment seems to be that Macron's own party (the still-respectable remnant of it, that is, in the National Assembly after today) seems to have disowned him.

He may be little more than a figurehead for the next few years, having to accommodate himself to whatever the parties in the Assembly patch together by way of a legislative program for the next year or two...
