At its peak, the Mongol Empire founded by Genghis Khan in 1206, covered some 9 million square miles (23 million square km) of territory. It was the largest contiguous empire in history and their great success is commonly attributed to their carnivorous diet.

Their diet consisted of sheep, goat, oxen, camel, yak, cattle and horse, as well as dairy like cheese, yogurt and the traditional Mongolian drink ‘Airag’ made from horse milk. They would also practice blood letting on their horses, slitting a small vein to collect and drink the blood whilst on long journeys or in times of limited food.

This way of eating allowed them to be the warriors they were, with an average height of over 6ft, strong and jacked, flowing manes of hair and big bushy beards. The speed and mobility for the size of these warriors was incredible and understandably terrifying for their enemies, especially with the Mongols ‘surrender or die’ policy.

However they eventually had their downfall, due to multiple reasons such as cataclysmic events and plagues. But a major factor was the dietary changes that were made as new territory was conquered. Introducing foods outside of their traditional way of eating that lead to more sedentary lifestyles and disease.
