Izza and I just finished out modern house construction; now we're starting on finishing the basement to create a one bedroom apartment to bring in some extra income!

In this short educational episode - I explain our the sound proofing strategy for this basement apartment. We look at how to sound proof a floor and ceiling assembly from top to bottom. I install resilient channels, that decouple the ceiling and floor above. The resilient channels, or Z-Girts, are only fastened on one side to allow the low frequency sounds like footsteps from above to dissipate with a tiny bit of movement. The roxul we have in between the studs as sound insulation should take care of all the high frequency sounds like music and voices. Finally - we install 2 layers of 5/8" drywall and create a fully sound proofed and sealed ceiling.

This series is going to be a series of small construction vlogs as I tackle this DIY construction project mostly by myself. Stay tuned!

Very helpful, thanks man!

Looks like investing in some rock wool is probably worth it, especially if you're using a small space :)

Hugo! Thanks so much but I have a question for you or any of your colleague followers. Do they make Rocksul with Paper backing so I can tack it or staple it to the bottom portion of the joist when you’re looking up from the basement floor to the ceiling?

Thanks for the video. Is this project finished yet? Can't wait for part two. I want to know how effective your choice of sound proofing is because I'm planning on doing the same thing.
