I have been using capture one for over two years now and one thing I prefer of lightroom is how the highlight / shadow sliders produce a softer look. Capture one highlight/shadow control introduces a lot of micro contrast, which really simulate high dynamic range, but that makes the image way too crispy and unnatural, especially on people. It seems to me that lightroom shadows slider tries to reveal details while maintaining a bit of the shadow, while capture one's tries to eliminate the actual shadow like it never existed and that might result in unpleasant results sometimes... That's why I usually correct the exposure by using the luma and rgb curves, but I would love to have lightroom's shadow/highlight tools in capture one. Apart from that, smart masks, and color calibration, I prefer capture one way more. Tried to use lightroom several times since when, but I end up using capture one all the time.

That was a really robust and practical tutorial. I hope you keep doing these. Personally - I think the new masking functionality in LrC has put everyone else on the defensive. It is amazingly powerful and relatively intuitive. Until this new update, I preferred C1’s layers. No longer.

I do like the pics on first import from Capure One over LRC. But I thin that's b/c CP1 automatically adds processing/presets/styles in the background and that's why the pictures look so much better on import into CP1.

Thanks- very useful. I have been considering switching because of the Fuji RAW file process, but I think I’ll stick with LR for now and learn the new tools!

Thanks for a very helpful video. I agree pretty much with all you had to say. I own a Fuji camera, so subscribed to Capture One for its superior Fuji file rendering. C1 is a very good post processing app and very powerful. I started with LightRoom since I owned other camera brands. I have always loved LR because of its ease of use. Now with its AI technology, being able to select a subject with one click etc., it offers something C1 doesn't. I'd say it's half a dozen of one and half a dozen of another. Either one can be used to get great results. However, LR works together with Photoshop in a symbiotic way. I use Tony Kuyper's TK8 plugin for Photoshop and can fine tune photos much easier than LR or C1. Sometimes it just comes down to the best workflow (which can change on a dime with new technology).

The tree trunks look a lot better in the C1 version. Something appears to be off with the LR camera profile because the tree trunks look way too flat.

I prefer C1 but the new AI masking in Lightroom and the price hike in C1 has me reconsidering Lightroom. My big issue with Lightroom is not having the HSL options when editing a mask and after being use to that I feel really limited.

I'm on C1. That subject masking on LR looks amazing.

nice tuto. have you already tried to make presets for ON1 PR2022.5 ? It is an amazing software which combines LRC capabilities and filters. They did plugin versions with C1 compatibility so I suppose they made masks, ... options for C1 ?

So what’s the fault setting did you use with the Fuji on Lightroom and capture one. in Lightroom it looks like you have Adobe standard as the profile? also a Capture One says you’re using the Capture One 12 engine? what version of Capture One are you using? What’s the default profile that you’re using Capture One? Provia?

Just looking at the price point: Lightroom + Photoshop saves me a lot of money every year which i can invest in better hardware. And together it offers more functionality like AI selection. Since version 23 I cannot even stick to the Sony version. So 29 € vs. 12 €... Nothing to even think about. 200 each year means every 5 years 1000 € for better hardware.

If you're a Nikon shooter it's a requirement.
