Florida's coral reef bleaching months ahead of schedule under extreme heat, climate change

Florida’s coral reefs are not faring so well under the extreme heat gripping the globe, to the point where they are prematurely turning white as water temperatures soar, experts say.

Some reefs in the Florida Keys have begun to lose their colour weeks earlier than normal and record-high water temperatures are to blame, as seawater temperatures in Florida are hitting hot tub-like levels of heat.

As Jackson Proskow explains, this is causing coral bleaching and severely damaging the ocean’s ecosystems.

On a dive for coral restoration last year I was working on the most northern nursery (Key Largo), at 30ft depth my dive computer read 89 degrees F mid September! and yes the majority of the corals meant for replanting were already bleached. In addition there was no replanting done last summer as the temperatures were to high. Having dove the keys for the last 40 years and seeing first hand that the third largest reef system in the world is now 50% dead is a stark reminder of what we are not leaving our children
