Suzy Is A Headbanger... 2025 (Covered by The Hawkbirds)

Background…
The song Suzy Is A Headbanger, written and composed by all the members of the Ramones, was released in 1977 on their album Leave Home. It's one of the album's fun, high-energy tracks, capturing the classic Ramones sound—short, fast, and packed with youthful energy and rebellious spirit. The song celebrates the joy of rock 'n' roll and the colorful characters, like Suzy, that populate the band's music. Interestingly, the character of Suzy is said to be inspired by the 1947 film, Nightmare Alley. In the movie, Zeena, like Suzy, is unapologetically herself. Working in a carnival, Zeena, who is seen as "different”, uses her unique abilities to her own advantage, much like how Suzy expresses herself through the loud, rebellious energy of punk rock. Also, the Ramones refer to Suzy’s mother as a "geek," which is a term for a carnival worker who performs grotesque acts for entertainment just as Zeena’s mother was in the movie.
Lyrics…
🎶 Ooo-whee, do it one more time for me!
Ooo-whee, do it one more time for me!
Can't stop stop that girl
there she goes again
I really really love to watch her
watch her headbangin'
Suzy is a headbanger
Her mother is a geek
Do it one more time for me
Ooo-ooo-whee! Ooo-ooo-whee!
Ooo-whee, do it one more time for me!
Ooo-whee, do it one more time for me!
Can't stop stop that girl
there she goes again
I really really love to watch her
watch her headbangin'
Suzy is a headbanger
Her mother is a geek
Do it one more time for me
Ooo-ooo-whee! Ooo-ooo-whee!

🧸 Brown Bear loves hearing us play “Suzy Is A Headbanger” because it makes him feel like he's part of a punk rock gang! When the fast beats and catchy guitar riffs start playing, his paws can't help but tap along to the rhythm. The song reminds him of his own wild adventures, headbanging through the forest with his crew , rocking out to the music that makes him feel free and unstoppable. He imagines Suzy is like his girlfriend, Rose the Rabbit, who isn’t afraid to be bold, showing everyone that punk rock spirit is not just for humans! 🧸🐇 ⚡️
Audio…
This song, with the key raised one full step to accommodate Sunflower’s voice, was recorded on March 7th, 2025, in our basement studio on 6 separate tracks, using a Zoom H6 audio interface, which was then mixed in GarageBand:
1. Vocals (Audix OM5 Hypercardioid Dynamic Microphones)
2. Lead guitar (Gibson Les Paul Studio)
3. Bass guitar (Ibanez miKro)
4. Bass drum (Ludwig Neusonic 22” Bass Drum)
5. Toms/snare (Ludwig 13" Tom, 16" Floor Tom, and 14” Snare)
6. Cymbals (Zildjian A Custom Cymbals)
*The drums were recorded using an overhead stereo pair of sE Electronics sE8 condenser microphones, complemented by an Audix D6 cardioid dynamic microphone for the kick drum.
To ensure a precise balance and bring out the nuances of each instrument, we relied on Sennheiser HD-660S2 headphones paired with an AudioEngine DAC3 amplifier during the mixing process. Given the small size of our studio and the inherent challenge of the drums' volume, we are continually working to achieve the best possible sound. We truly appreciate all of your feedback, which plays a crucial role in refining our work. Please keep the comments coming… every suggestion helps!
