Canes, Back Braces and Assistive Devices and Social Security Disability Claims

Do you use a walking cane, knee or back brace, or other assistive device to help you walk, stand or balance? Frequently Social Security disability claimants with physical impairments rely on assistive devices to help with activities of daily living or just to function on a day to day basis.

As I discuss in this video, however, Social Security judges expect to see a doctor’s prescription for your assistive device. If you are using a cane, crutches, or brace or wrap that you picked up from the drug store or borrowed from a friend you need to be prepared to demonstrate that your treating doctor knows about the assistive device and supports your use of it.

I had four surgery's, and one month hyperberic treatments to save my leg, poor cerculation, can't stay on my legs without swelling to long, part of my left heel cut off, big toe leader cut out to replace my dameged aquelese tenden, sergen told me I'd never walk right again, went home first time with a walker, last time in a wheelchair, turned my house into a obstacle course so I don't appear so disfuntional when I'm out with my cane, I don't get out to often, it hurts, but pain iv excepted is a part of my life, and the ground willussally break your falls.

I bought my own cane but my doctor documented that I needed to use when when I was walking around is that good enough I wonder.

Mr Ginsberg, does having a handicap license plate recommended by my doctor help prove my mobility limitations?

I have a back brace prescribed by my LPN at the Pain Center. I have a rollator, shower chair and straight cane that were all prescribed by my APN who is my Primary Care Physician, whom I have been seeing for four and 1/2 years. She has witnessed my disability worsen. Is this going to hold weight with a judge?

I used a cane because I have a knee injury and the doctor wanted me to take a step forward without it. He said in a sort of frustrated manner, “ just put that ( the cane) on the side” as if he thought I was full of crap using a cane. Maybe I read him wrong but can using the cane be detrimental to my case? He never asked if it was prescribed.

Is recommended virtually the same thing as Prescribed? My doctor told me to get a cane since it would help improve my gait but he never has given me a piece of paper saying get a cane.

What if my doctor told me to get a cane to assist me with my back and knee problem?

Kaiser Permanente doctors do not prescribe these things. They will refer you to another department/division for evaluation.
