Trade or Tensions: The Future of Pakistan-India Relations

Can Pakistan and India overcome their decades-long rivalry to build a future based on trade relations? In this episode of Unraveled with Marvi Sirmed, the host explores this question with security analyst and writer Ejaz Haider. The discussion delves into why Pakistan is not pursuing trade with India and why India is disengaged from Pakistan. Haider emphasizes that political stability must be Pakistan's top priority; without it, the country is in no position to reach out to anyone for building trade, let alone with its arch-rival. He also argues that Pakistan needs to produce goods that would make other countries eager to trade. Sirmed believes there is still a market in South Asia for goods that Pakistan already manufactures, such as its superior-quality textiles.

For more insights into the possibility of trade relations between Pakistan and India and how economic ties can pave way for peace, tune into this episode.

*Modi has clearly and repeatedly articulated his policy towards Pakistan in simple words, "TALKS (about trade, visa, cricket) and TERRORISM CANNOT GO TOGETHER WITH PAKISTAN". Ejaz did not touch this specific point while creating paralysis with his habitual over analysis. After the 1999 Kargil backstabbing, many coming generations of India would not trust Pakistan unless there is a fundamental change in the thinking and some solid actions by Pakistan to build the trust again, such as surrendering of occupied Kashmir to India which may result into getting rid of backbreaking nuclear arsenal and unbearable defense budget which eats away almost 50% of the annual tax revenues of Pakistan while 40% go to pay the debt. The percentage expenses on these two items would continue until default unless you have country like USA, SAUDIA CHINA or India to wholesale rescue the currently at the edge of failing state Pakistan. They would have earned billions of dollars every year if they had earned the trust by charging a fee for the transport of oil and gas from Iran and Central Asia which India can get completed and operational. Besides massive development and infrastructure construction for the next 20 to 30 years, India would require enormous quantities of cement, tiles, granite and other items such as minerals and ores for the factories in India from Pakistan would have generated 7 to 8 billion dollars every year. Pakistan should never forget that India is now an economy which is more than 10 times today and the gap would keep increasing as India has crossed the escape velocity in the space of development though would remain behind China*

Ms. Sirmad starts off saying that both Bharat and Pakistan are nuclear powered nations. It beats the heck out of me of the relevance of the nuclear arms unless she wants to place both the countries on par, which they are not

Its amazing how Aizaz Haider is discussing the possibility and desirability of opening trade with India as if everything is normal and only Pakistan has to do cost and profit analysis before taking this decision. This is typical of how the strategic thinkers plan the next move.Very naive may I say. Trade with India is no longer an option available for Pakistan till it finally decides to call off its proxi war with India. It has indoctrinated its population enough to carry on this across the border terrorism even when the state of Pakistan decides to call it off. Who will neutralise the poison in the minds of Madarasa educated Pakistanis. There was a time India was ready to increase trade with Pakistan irrespective of the hostilities between India and Pakistan in the hope that increased trade will somehow improve the relations between two countries. The result was MFN status by India to Pakistan. But Pakistan was sure of destroying India with its deep rooted enmity. Even the invitation by newly elected Prime Minister Modi to Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif on his oath taking ceremony and later the visit by Prime Minister Modi to Nawaz Sharif residence in Lahore by breaking all protocols did not make Pakistan stop its cross border terrorism in Kashmir. After Pulwama and Uri, India has realised that normal relationship with Pakistan is not possible and hence total disengagement with Pakistan. So the option of trade whatever its pros and cons is no longer available to Pakistan. Merits and possibilities of Pakistan gaining from this trade notwithstanding, India has decided to leave Pakistan to its games. Pakistan till it exists will not give up its enmity with India and India with its huge economy and international stature will not engage with Pakistan.

Pakistan always mentioned two nuclear armed neighbours with un resolved issues of cross border terrorism and unresolved borders and trade between two is zero. While India and China are also two nuclear armed neighbours with unresolved borders and trade between two is 120 billion dollars per annually.
So you can see who is stupid.

If Pakistan gets to trade with India, the ordinary people of Pakistan will have affordable "rotti" on their dining tables....it's as simple as that. I don't think Mr. Haider care about them to start with.

You would never trade with India if you wait to find a thing that could be used as leverage against India. Also, India is not stupid to let it happen. After the amount of war and terrorist attacks, India is on alert to prevent such dependencies.

Pakistan stopped trade with India in 2019 to punish India… but found itself in dire straits very soon 😢
Now they are hoping India will invite them to start trade again on Pakistani terms 😅😅

The problem with Pakistani analyst is their focus on India is more than their own country. They are thinking what will India get or not get with trade and not what Pakistan will or will not get. They are not thinking about how it will help them lower food inflation etc. this India obsession will cause then to make a series of bad decisions just to hurt India and eventually they will break down as a country.

*I Would Never Ever Ask Pakistan To Forget Kashmir Or Resolve Any Such Dispute In Exchange Of Resuming Trade.*
*I Know Pakistan Power Holders May Temporarily Agree With Such Demand. But, As Soon As They Gain Some Confidence, They Will Again Start The Conflict.*
*Kashmir And Religi0n Will Never Get Resolved Between These 2 Countries. So, Don't Waste Time. Focus On Something Else.*
