I think humility is the biggest tip. If you are willing to just listen, you will learn so much.

Timely advice. We are relocating this year and will jump back into animals slowly as we learn our new environment.

BTW, You guys look like you are aging in reverse! Who knew you would find the fountain of youth in Wisconsin :-)

Don’t get ANYTHING until you have proper facilities to care for them.

My 1st time growing cucumbers. I bought 4 plants (hills)
It rained a lot. I had to take 4 or 5 large garbage bags to the dump to get rid of all the watermelon sized cucumbers.
1 hill is enough for two people.

I found out, Lezpedeza hay helps keep goats parasite free, from the county extension office. Only feed 2 months at a time then regular hay.
I was so afraid the goats would eat something on the bad list... they seem to not want those plants. I learned on day 2 of my first goat, have lots of benadryl on hand. Bee stings tend to swell up bad.
I'm learning something new daily.

If you've just planted TOO large of a garden and can't get it all harvested (cucumber, potatoes).... Don't over worry yourself...dump some good soil on the rotting cucumbers and both cucumbers and potatoes will volunteer themselves next spring..

Yes. Infrastructure goes in 1st. Utilities & perimeter fencing (with gates). Research with your ultimate goal in mind. 😊

Learn how to can, smoke, pickle, preserve your food. It's just a matter of time and the power grid will be non existent.

I volunteered my time on a dairy goat farm. I wanted dairy goats, but wanted to know what I was really getting into and to be prepared with all I needed before I bought any. That was 24 years ago and I still have dairy goats and have had a pretty healthy herd. Have a relationship with a vet if you ever need one. I made sure he got my dog and cat business and if I needed him for the goats, especially meds, he would be familiar with me already. We don't have many large animal vets here, but they may have things you will eventually need.

Don't reinvent the wheel or get clever with shortcuts. Listen to the voice of experience over the desire to jump in with both feet. Stay safe wear the protective stuff and be prepared for the worst case scenario.

Good advice, and great comments here. I would add, don't be averse to downsizing as you get older. Find easier ways to do things. Dear Hubby and I don't get as much done in a day as we used to. We're not as flexible as we used to be, nor as strong.
