GIS ArcMap 10.7.1 Video Tutorial by Gregory Lund, Lecturer/Lab Manager, University of Washington, Tacoma, Washington (State), USA

Part 2. Preparing your ‘Storage Device’ and creating a ‘GIS 311 Directory’ to hold everything related to GIS this term.
6. In this step you will get started with your Storage Device. As noted in the description of this lab: Data management is a fundamental skill that you must master and demonstrate prior to working with GIS data. GIS applications are data-intensive - often including many gigabytes of files. GIS applications require a well-structured, and uncluttered file storage system in order to function properly. This lab will guide you through a specific process that must be mastered IMMEDIATELY. This lab (and directions herein) will serve as a handy reminder (as necessary) as you complete the remaining labs this quarter (and beyond). Your storage device could be a new USB thumb drive, a different external drive (connected via USB-A or USB-C (much faster), or your internal hard drive. This is a decision/choice based on how you will be participating in GIS 311 this term. If working in the Computer Lab on campus, you’d likely be working off of an external storage device. If you have ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap/Catalog etc) on your own or borrowed computer, you will likely use your internal hard drive (but could also use an external drive). If (due to Covid-19 for example and class is ‘remote’) you will/would be using the BIG – IP VPN and logging into the computer lab remotely, likely using a USB Thumb or other external drive. Ultimately, students must store/save their GIS work (into what will be titled ‘GIS Directory’) on either an internal hard drive (within the computer (for speed)), or an external Hard Drive/Thumb Drive. In addition, it is highly recommend that students use at least One 32 GB (Minimum) thumb drive for backup, as well as cloud storage, backing up their work every day.
