I want to thank you for this analysis. Of the dozens I've seen on this game, it was never laid out as well as you have done. Most just say Fischer blundered the bishop because of the pawn move and that's it.

I'd seen game 1 from the 1972 match analysed before, but this version explains it better than any other.

Fischer was famous for trying to win, and it should still have been a draw.

Fischer knew he was up against the very best of the Soviet chess machine and thus kept switching openings.

As a true 12 yr. old chess nut at the time in St. Louis and won H.S. trophies (I actually lettered in chess Chicago H.S. in '78) - this was THE most anticipated "Match of the Century' which also came one year after Ali vs Frasier - 'Match of the Century' an exciting time! U.S. was seriously depressed more from Fish losing than Ali, yet both came back to win championship and a belt.

I like the way you break down the sequence of moves with the arrows, but I'd like to suggest a basic color scheme for the arrows based on number of moves, such that the first move is, for example, blue and the last move is yellow or red or whatever. Agree, Spassky had and entire team of grandmasters helping him prep while Fischer was pretty much on his own not an easy feat to achieve. Funny you say Fischer was saying Spassky was saying he was a worse chess player. Latter Fischer said Spassky was the best player in the world the true champion 😂
