Kids come up with some pretty weird excuses, but little Eugene Otto tops them all. He blamed everything on a doll.
Robert the Doll was given to Eugene as a gift in 1904. It was his favorite toy and he took the doll everywhere. Eugene even gave the doll its own room in the house and would talk to it as if it was a real person… and some say it talked back. Shortly after Robert showed up, strange things started happening around the house. At first, Eugene’s parents pointed the finger at him but Eugene pointed the finger at Robert. After a while, Eugene’s parents started to believe him.
The Otto family and their staff heard unfamiliar voices whispering in Robert’s room. Things around the house, including Robert, would disappear and then turn up in bizarre places. Doors and cabinets would open and slam shut when no one was near them. Even creepier, multiple people claimed to witness Robert move around and change the expression on his face.
When Eugene went off to college, Robert was put in the attic and remained there until Eugene passed away in 1974. Then the house was sold. The new owner, Myrtle Reuter, reported similar happenings in the house but she didn’t get rid of Robert. She even brought the doll with her when she moved to her next house. In 1994, Robert might have given her a bit too much trouble because Myrtle donated him to the Fort Martello Museum. She told them the doll was haunted and moving around too much to keep around anymore. He’s been there ever since and you can go visit him.
Nowadays, people complain that their cameras and phones don’t work when they’re near Robert, but it’s said that if you ask him nicely, he’ll let you take a quick picture or two.
Is Robert more than just a doll? Or was he just a fall guy for Eugene’s bad behavior? What do you think?
