I think it's because they'd have the interpreter up there for those in the audience and it's less work compared to having both a live interpreter and subtitles

I still laughed and if you don't know deaf culture, then of course this seems obvious.

I am not deaf myself, though I know deaf people and work with them(UK based so I'm more familiar with BSL). It is always best to get their knowledge and experience first hand.

From my understanding, it is for those in the crowd when a speech is given live. In addition, literacy levels in deaf communities are much lower than that of hearing people, mostly due to stigma and lack of access for their needs.

Signing is easier to comprehend and understand for children and young teenagers compared to reading to. They'll be a lot more familiar with it.

Its still a funny sketch, just hope this answers questions people might genuinely have.

Also signing is such a wonderful, expressive and creative language and one of the most un-PC languages out there. They are as subtle as a brick and I'm absolutely here for it!

Lots of people who speak American Sign Language and are deaf don’t know English. Sign language is taught to people who speak English through loose translations of hand shapes and movements. So a good bit of deaf people don’t speak English hope that helps someone

The real reason is that, for majority of interviews and speeches, there's a live audience. Kinda hard to add subtitles in real time, and then people get too bored. "If we already have the interpreter, why waste more money adding subtitles?" Kinda way of thinking.

Deaf people often can’t read very well (i think the average reading level for a deaf person is somewhere around 4th grade) so it’s much easier for them to have an interpreter

My guess would be because auto generated subtitles are probably not reliable enough and they don’t have a script since it’s live

The reason they have a sign interpreter is because there are people watching him on person or live on tv, and subtitles may not be available or something I think

It’s for people at the event in person, and because something like this, or announcements of emergency situations (eg: announcements of mandatory evacuations) are filmed live you can’t prep subtitles and be confident nothing important will be said that wasn’t planned (and therefore not in the pre-made subtitles), no one wants to risk auto generated subtitles which are liable to be wrong, nor could anyone reasonably type at pace with someone speaking live

I mean subtitles or an interpreter works for people, it just depends on the person. While people who grew up with the oral method and do not know signs as well may need subtitles, some people find it easier to follow along with the signer.

I actually had this conversation at work last week.
We figured it’s for the people in the audience mostly. As for the people at home, maybe it just feels subhuman to be forced to read subtitles? We didn’t really have a good answer.

This has to do with the concept of deaf culture: People with auditive impairments have formed a culture around that and have developed a culture of their own. Think about it, they have same commonalities, challenges and even the same language.

This is also why when you look into this rabbithole you'll also see people within this culture that are against medical intervention (like cochlear implants) that might improve quality of life because that's percieved as a threat to the in group. Some really crazy shit

BRO im literally deaf but id rather read subtitles lmao. Interpreter ate often way too sloppy at signing and hard to understand

Edit: just wanna to say, not every interpreter are sloppy signing. I just rather to read subtitles over watching interpreter. Some of my family like to watch interpreter. It depends.
