Your lack of willingness to smack the tree with the gavel made me chuckle 😂

Literally my issue with Mice and Mystics. I've now played scenario 1 about 5 times, once years ago, then again a couple years after that, then 3 times in a row a few months ago. I said "dude, can we please just skip scenario 1 or can we give ourselves some extra advantage?" he wanted to keep trying it AND trying to do the thing that makes it harder to get something that you'll use later. We always lose in that room. I even said "dude, I don't think I want to play this again cause I don't want to do scenario 1 over and over". We did it 1 more time and can say I won't play the game again.

Sounds like the game could do with a re-balance, especially if it is for young children. Even something like replacing a miss with a crit (2x damage) or something.
And having more pages with more routes. Win go to B, lose, go C instead and don't see B this go. Or choose between 2 objectives to complete on each map, do objective A go to map B, do objective C, go to map D.
With these types of games, more is generally better.

I’m choosing from Mice and Mystics, Stuffed fables and Wonder Book. What would you recommend? (Kids are 5+ and 8+)

feels like there should be a couple more pages/maps in the book

tmnt shadows of the past fixes that problem because it has more levels and you advance differently based on if you won or lost you don't have to re-do the level

I still enjoy Choose Your Own Adventure books. But, they suffer from the same "Groundhogs Day" syndrome.

Rolling 2 misses into 2 misses into a reroll miss doesn't happen 50% of the time.
Rolling 2 misses alone is already a 25% chance, let alone 5 out of 5 dice.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it doesn't happen that much. ;)
