Me and a friend did a Frame by frame analysis of this movie and discovered that Steve doesn't just point and the blocks appear, you can actually see he kind of throws the item to the ground, as we saw a brown object fly through the air right to where the dirt was placed each time!

To be honest, I always saw the Minecraft movie as just Steve and Alex actually completing Minecraft.

I love that the props are hand crafted and the look of it. We have so many honesty boring animated or CGI stuff. And for me at least, Minecraft is about crafting your own world.
