I had this happen to me, it killed my Drudiggon and discarded its own Energy, good thing I tech a Giovanni in case I meet Golem Decks

so Gyarados goes from 180>160, 4 energy to 3
Alakazam attacks for 60+30+30+30 (150) + Giovanni (10)

I build a deck with hitmonlee and farfetch'd today and it worked very well against Gyarados.
The deck is an Aerodactyl deck with 1 copy of marshadow aswell.
It puts on pressure early and is very good at countering the new meta tank Druddigon.

I’ve been playing around with the Golem deck and have seen a lot of success against Gyarados and just about everything else. Currently running it pretty much identically to the tournament winner but swapped out one of the Druds and the Potion for Old Amber and Aerodactyl EX. Got tired of dead drawing the 2nd Drud in mid to late game when it was no longer useful and I’ve found that Aero gives some extra power if the main engine struggles to get going. The single energy retreat cost on Aero is really nice to avoid giving up two points, plus Old Amber offers some niche re-positioning utility thru its discard mechanic. Only deck that regularly gives me trouble is Celebi which just seems to have a leg up in pacing

Pikachu/Zebstrika can be absolutely oppressive against more decks than just Gyarados--making it a good pick overall.
Same goes for Arcanine/Charizard EX, though that's more dependent on getting good Moltres flips. (though not as volatile as Misty)

I'd like to personally see Alakazam and Jynx tech later too, as those have the potential to counter both Gyara and Pidgeot EX.

the best way to counter gyrados is having a pokemon that can attack backline, eliminate the fish before it turns into gyrados, ezpz

That 180hp is it's biggest hurdle. But, it has some simple counters. Just don't let it evolve, easier said than done. If not that, just use your energies wisely, build up two attackers. Celebi would do much better if people played the damn deck right, and stop putting all their energy on a single Celebi only to get it knocked out and no backup plan.
