My company is doing layoffs and I took a severance package and am retiring early. My last day is Dec 31. I turn 55 next year. :( They won't allow me to stay employed for 'literally' one more minute to be the calendar year I turn 55. So stupid. Therefore, I am going to have to do a SEPP in order to access my 401k.

Pretty sure it was Congress that chose 59-1/2 (and the other ages mentioned).

Edit: also note the 2 year lookback for IRMAA, and the age for QCDs did not change with the age for RMDs.
