Tie a Yellow Ribbon was a pop song that became the anthem for returning soldiers from Vietnam. The lyrics are about getting out of prison, but the sentiments of wondering how you will be greeted when you return from a very unpopular war were similar.
When a family member or friend was coming home from military service, their loved ones would tie actual yellow ribbons on trees near their home.

That’s why the song had so much airplay.

You were saying the older songs had the advantage of time (sales over a longer period) but newer songs have the advantage of sheer world population + better global distribution. The world population in the 50's/60's/70's was only half of what it is today. A new song can get more views/sales/likes in one week than two decades of sales back then.

How is it possible that Elvis isn’t on this list and both MJ and Queen only have one song each? They are literal legends

Just so you know, Andy Gibb was NOT part of the Bee Gees! He was their baby brother who had a solo career and who was the first to die. He died at the age of thirty from heart issues after years of substance abuse! Strangely, twins Robin and Maurice have also now died leaving the eldest Barry as the sole surviving brother. I can't imagine how hard it must be to be the eldest yet the last living of your siblings!!

How in the hell is bohemian rhapsody nowhere on this list? That's insane

"Freak Out" was code for F*** Off, which is what the doorman told the Chic band members when denying them entrance into Studio 54. They turned that into a huge disco/dance hit. Props to them. Incredible bass lines in so many of their hit songs as well.

*FOR THOSE OF YOU WONDERING* why songs like Thriller or Bohemian Rhapsody can fail to make the top 100 all-time when other songs can top it:

Billboard stops counting a song's charting success once it falls off the charts. There is a trend where if a song starts out MASSIVE, it generally doesn't last on the charts too long, mainly due to the fact that it gets overplayed and people get tired of it quickly. This effect is amplified by the Recurrency Rule. The Recurrency Rule makes it so that:
1. If a descending song falls below #50 after 20 weeks, it goes recurrent and gets removed from the charts
or
2. If a descending song falls below #25 after 52 weeks (a year), it goes recurrent and gets removed from the charts.

This heavily skews the data towards songs that don't start out as massive, but starts to grow on people over time and slowly becomes more successful. Some songs such as Mood or Blinding Lights take MASSIVE advantage of this because of their release time. Blinding Lights and Mood were both huge during 2020, a year where artists weren't really able to record anything in their studios due to COVID. Because of the lack of competition, both those songs dominated the charts for a really long time, which resulted in them not falling victim to the Recurrency Rule as early as most songs would. That's why they're ranked so high when other songs such as Thriller or Bohemian Rhapsody fail to make the top 100 of all-time.

Andy Gibb is the youngest brother to the BeeGees. (Stands for Brothers Gibb). He was always a solo artist. He was my first concert and a teen heart throb in the late 70’s. I loved Shadow Dancing. It was a totally different audience than his brothers music. Also, Barry is the only one still alive. He is the oldest Gibb brother.

There’s a story behind that “cheesy” Paul McCartney song. In an interview John Lennon said that all Paul McCartney does is write silly little love songs. So Paul actually wrote a song called Silly Love Songs in response, and it became a hit.

Where is “Beat it”? “Smooth Criminal”? “Black or white”? And HOW “Thriller” it’s not number 1?? 🤷🏻‍♂️ it makes no sense!

When we think about those "too slow" and "lots of ballads" songs, that each one was the soundtrack to many people's treasured memories of slow-dancing at a school dance.

LOVE it how Joel's eyes light up when he is happy or when he hears a song he has never heard before and likes it.

The way Roomie said "lets do it" gives chaotically wholesome neighbours kid in adult form vibes

'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In' were on a single track that was released, like a two song medley. They weren't separately that successful. And wow! I didn't expect to see Savage Garden on this list. As an Aussie, there are lots of their songs that I can sing word for word, but I had no idea they did well overseas. And Gotye... I think he had released three brilliant alternative albums before 'Somebody I Used to Know', and I remember being super excited to hear him on mainstream radio, but it makes me sad now that he's known as a one-hit wonder.

Andy Gibb is the younger brother of the Bee Gees but wasn't a Bee Gee, which was just Maurice, Barry and Robin.

I'd love to see a similar version on the European charts

I love the small details Roomie adds, like the eq stuff for shenia or how paula is singing flat, actually trying out the stevie wonder bar. That's the best part of the content he makes to me. I love when he can show his music knowledge

Macarena is still played at every party in the UK. It was played at my wedding last year and it got a lot of people on the dance floor 😂
