Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Asylums with doors open wide
Where people had paid to see inside
For entertainment they watch his body twist
Behind his eyes he says, "I still exist"

[Chorus]
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside

[Verse 2]
In arenas he kills for a prize
Wins a minute to add to his life
But the sickness is drowned by cries for more
Pray to God, make it quick, watch him fall

[Chorus]
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, this is the way
This is the way, this is the way
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside

[Verse 3]
You'll see the horrors of a faraway place
Meet the architects of law face to face
See mass murder on a scale you've never seen
And all the ones who try hard to succeed

[Chorus]
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside
This is the way, step inside

[Verse 4]
And I picked on the whims of a thousand or more
Still pursuing the path that's been buried for years
All the dead wood from jungles and cities on fire
Can't replace or relate, can't release or repair
Take my hand and I'll show you what was and will be

the thing is Ian really meant it. Closer is a manifesto of Ian's mental state .

I know people prefer "Unknown Pleasures" personally I'm more of a "Closer". Both albums are great, however this album is one of my all times favourites.

An old man here. This song cuts deeper emotionally now more than it ever did.

With what’s going off in the world right now, the title says it all . Ian Curtis . Genius RIP.

Can't remember ever being blown away by an opening album track as much as this when I first listened to it back in 81.

I think, Ian could feel lifes minutes ticking, and could visualize it in a way that was unique to him. I appreciate this, on an aethereal level

Tak posępnej, mrocznej, depresyjnej, zimnej, odchumanizowanej muzyki nie było nigdy wcześniej i raczej już nie będzie chyba nigdy. Ian spoczywaj w pokoju wiecznym. Amen.

Hauntingly beautiful and dark. this song, with its mesmerizing beat and melancholy lyrics, takes you to a strange place filled with darkness and misery and yet still is chillingly beautiful. Ian’s poetry is so fascinating and intelligent and his voice is filled with pure passion and pain. Joy Division was so powerful.

Just loving these new lyric videos to these classic JD songs - way better than those godawful reimagined videos.

I can't find anything that even comes close to this. I was still at school and begged my father to let me stay up to watch but he stayed up and watched also. there is something wrong with that man he said. but even he had watched transfixed. MASTERLY I say again.

The greatest underground band to ever walk the planet, and even the Velvets would have stood back and admired Ian and the Division!. Priceless Joy Division!!!!

What a monumental work and hasn't lost any of its power. Timeless.

A peerless album opener. Ian beckoning us in to come and see his world view - be prepared, folks, it's bleak. Sets the tone for the rest of the record superbly. Surely contains some autobiographical elements too regarding the idea of seeing torture from the outside and looking in. This is how Ian described being on stage IIRC.

To my humble opinion, this is the intelligent mix of Komakino and Wilderness with a spoonfull of These Days.
