Oia & Imerovigli, Santorini, Greece: aerial views from a drone

Oia is a scenic village on the north west edge of the Santorini island. Built on the steep slope of the caldera, the idyllic surroundings of the town display a complex of white washed, blue domed churches and charming, traditional Cycladic houses and cave houses that are carved into the rock face.

Imerovigli, a few kilometres south of Oia, is also crossed by narrow, paved paths. Its houses are likewise built amphitheatrically around the caldera. From Imerovigli, one can spot and access Skaros Rock, a rock formation and collection of ruins. The formation was created through the volcanic activity and was used as defensive fortifications considering its elevation. But 1650's eruption caused several strong earthquakes which collapsed part of the town built on top of the rock into the sea.
