1922 High Relief Peace Dollar with Unique Antique Finish
judd-2018 is a recently discovered trial striking of the 1922 high relief peace dollar, struck in business-strike format and first reported by david w. lange in 2007. it is one of the rarest die combinations from 1921 to 1922, a time period when the mint experimented extensively with the relief of anthony de francisci’s artistic peace dollar design, in sandblast, satin, proof, and business-strike finishes. judd-2018 combines george t. morgan’s slightly reworked 1922 high relief obverse, which was later used to strike the 1922 high relief proof issues, with the old reverse design used on the 1921 peace dollars (which were struck in high relief), with a possibly unique sandblasted antique finish.
1922 Proof and High Relief Peace Dollars
In addition to the common regular strikes, there are a handful of other 1922 proof and high relief Peace dollar varieties to at least be aware of. They are rare to the point that it is extremely unlikely you would have one or ever even see one.
The first variety is called a high relief Peace dollar. This variety is not widely known, nor is it included in many collections because of its rarity and value. It is discussed here for the sake of completeness. Trial pieces of high-relief 1922 Peace dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint in January 1922 and nearly all 35,401 of these coins were later melted. Only one coin with the 1922 high-relief obverse and 1921 reverse has been located. Collectors considering any alleged 1922 high-relief Peace dollar should have the coin authenticated. You almost certainly have a regular strike 1922 $1 coin, hence why an expert would need to verify otherwise.
