Been waiting for this, especially a comparison between Xtractive New Generation vs Signature Gen 8. Just wish there was something as clear as Gen 8 indoors and as dark as Xtractive outdoors and in the car.

I'm now on my 3rd pair of Xtractive lenses, I highly prefer them over the original. I never liked clipping sunglasses over mine, often touching the lens and making smears. I feel that mine are very clear (untinted) while indoors and I'm happy with that as well.

You've done well with the comparisons here doc, we haven't even heard from the reps but have been selling this for a few months. When it comes to the residual tint when indoors we like to call it "taking the edge off" and it gets around most peoples hesitation.

I'm glad that photochromatic lens technology is being improved and hopefully it will become available in more affordable brands. Currently for the price you quoted I could get TWO pairs of photochromic prescription glasses (or prescription tinted sunglasses).

I've been rocking the transitions regular for 14 years but got the Xtra active last year for the 1st time and I love them! Got a new pair again this year and seems they are even better than last year... I recommend them to everyone who wears glasses. I'm fixing to get them for my daughter this year for the 1st time.

Xtractive always had a little tint to it when clear some patients don't like it. You can see it best against white paper. Great vid 👍

The Transitions Drivewear speciality lens was what people in the past bought specifically for driving bur the new XtrActive for the first offers a photochromic solution people can now wear anywhere. Its a perfect all round line and I think if it would get a little darker it would be spot on for most people but it still does the job. I have dedicated sunglasses but they’re good to have when you forget them and when I bought mine last year I was happy with the product. Essilor’s lenses are highly regarded.

Nice review. Seem about a generation off from being truly adaptive but it definitely seems like the jump we've been waiting for.

I have just ordered a pair of progressive prescription glasses with Transitions Xtractive Polarised lenses. Also getting anti glare coating. I am sick of having to switch from regular glasses to sunglasses when out & about, so I have my fingers crossed that my new glasses will replace both of my old glasses. Average summer temperatures in the Gold Coast, Queensland Australia are around 28 degrees C (82 degrees F), so it will be interesting to see how dark these glasses get at higher temperatures. Can't wait to get my hands on my new glasses!

Follow Up: Well, it took just a week from the order date to get the glasses! Only picked them up a couple of days ago & the weather has been very overcast, windy with lots of rain on the first day. Today is much better with bright sunshine, some clouds & about 27 degrees C. The actual changes in lens darkness, going from indoors to outdoors is not really noticeable from the wearer's point of view (Of course, our eyes compensate for brightness changes automatically, within limits). Same applies going from outside to indoors. This, in my opinion is the way it should be, unobtrusive technology! My new glasses, compared to my 12 month old prescription clear, anti glare coated glasses, have more contrast (yielding more detail/sharpness in bright scenes) & also more color saturation. This reminds me of the difference between a photo straight out of a camera side by side with the same photo that has been processed in Photoshop (with increased contrast, saturation & sharpening). So far, I am happy with new Transitions Xtracive polarised glasses. I still prefer my old clear glasses, when indoors & especially when working on the computer.

Super helpful review Doc, I'm shopping for lenses and the Transitions Xtractive coating is an option. Now I know what I'm buying!

I will NEVER have anything else on my lenses. The transition is dark and it’s funny that the lens is dark indoors but one really doesn’t notice on the vision side! Great selling point! I keep wear overs in my truck for sun emergencies. XActive IS THE BEST!!! I tried sapphire transition and cannot even wear outside 😒. And the sapphire really doesn’t look blue. Thanks 😊

Great vid doc. This will help me a lot in explaining to patients the pros and cons of high end photochromic lenses. Thanks!

I work for an Essilor optical lab and I've seen the changes in transition lenses over the years and I just got the Progressive XtrActive New Generation lenses. I think the advancement in the technology is awesome. They really transition better than the transition 8 which was geared more towards temperature than light. Usually in the morning when driving east to work and driving west going home from work, I've had had to use my mirrored eyeglasses which has a polarized lens behind it to block the sun's glare. Now, I can rely on my XtrActive lenses to block the glare without having to use my mirrored glasses. The cost is expensive but worth it and as an employee I get one free pair each year and 50% for each additional pair. Also keep in mind your expensive is partly due to your Optometrists' markup.😎🤓

Great info, thanks. My request would be opposite, for custom option for ‘less’ dark. I rarely need full dark sunglasses. A level 2 would probably suit me best and have the added advantage of a quicker response time, which is more important to me for regular day to day, in and out of cars and buildings working, etc., and in sun and cloud.

Super informative review! I've been considering going for a transitions-style lens for my new prescription and I definitely think I am going to try the Xtractive based on their ability to tint more in a car and in warmer environments.

My best of both words is Xtractive as my lenses, with a polarized sunglass magnet clip-on I can put on the frames when I drive.

Thanks for the review! I too am sensitive to light and also, I have a complicated, strong prescription that includes prism in my lenses for diplopia. I have progressive lenses with the Gen8 grey that I like, but am looking forward to trying the Xtractive. Im waiting for my over-contact prism prescription sunglass lenses to arrive, bc driving is real tough from glare and sunlight. By the end of my day, my eyes get super fatigued and I don't think some people with 'regular' bad vision understand what that is like. Anyway, thanks for what you do!!

Good video. You mentioned XtraActive Polarized lenses in the beginning but you never commented on how good the polarization was in comparison to typical polarized glasses. From your quick showing in the video, it appears to confirm my experience that the XtraActive Polarized lenses are woefully poor at polarization. A typical polarized lens would have made the laptop screen completely dark. The added expense to make XtraActive Polarized, seems like a non starter. Thoughts?
