The Wind Through the Keyhole SPOILER Book Review

Welcome to my book review of "The Wind Through the Keyhole" by Stephen King. This journey takes us back to the world of Mid-World, familiar to fans of the Dark Tower series. What sets this book apart is its place within the series – it's often referred to as 'Dark Tower 4.5' as it nestles between the fourth and fifth books.

In "The Wind Through the Keyhole," we follow Roland Deschain, the iconic gunslinger, as he and his ka-tet seek shelter from a brutal storm. During this respite, Roland recounts a story from his youth, offering a glimpse into his early days as a gunslinger. But there's more – within this tale lies another, a fable known as "The Wind Through the Keyhole." and for me... this is where things fall apart. As you'll see, I REALLY don't like fairytales.

Wizard and Glass is my favorite. The love story between Susan and Roland is amazing. I found myself falling in love with Susan alongside Roland. She reminded me of my wife; we started dating when we were late-teenagers and have been married for 10 years. I felt emotionally invested and was absolutely heartbroken at the end. After finishing that section of the book I had to pause reading for a couple of days just to process and contemplate what it would be like to lose my first love in such a traumatic way and at such a young age. My wife was sitting next to me as I read the paragraphs after the event that Susan suffered and couldn’t help myself from crying. I tell people “If you start The Dark Tower, please at the very least make it through Wizard and Glass.”

Knowing that you don't like Eyes off the Dragon, says a very lot about why I disagree with you about your understanding of these books. These are good reviews, and I'm not being hateful, but I can't get on board with your perspective.

You should never read books out of release order, same for movies.

I commented a week or two ago on your Rose Madder video saying I was also following along with the Jimmy Mango DT guide.

I just finished this book and I think I came to the conclussion as you- this book is *pointless* to the overall series. I don't think it's an inherently bad book, but like you it's probably been like 10 books since I finished Wizard and Glass. I was really looking forward to getting back into the main series, so it was a real letdown for there to be no real progress with it.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone! And I should note, I DID like Eyes of the Dragon, but at least with that I knew what it was from the jump- I wasn't duped into reading a fairy tale while thinking it was a core DT book.

Edit: seeing other comments, seems like this is a great "cool down" book after finishing the series. Wish I'd known that before, but other guides online and even Stephen King in the forward said to read it between 4 and 5!

The story within the story, specifically the Wind Through the Keyhole, that Roland tells that kid, is basically The Talisman, inasmuch as plot is concerned, which was basically Jason and the Argonauts, inasmuch as plot is concerned.

This book is outside the main series. It's a great book by itself and a chance to hang out with the ka-tet once more!

I actually really liked this book, but, I have read the whole Dark Tower series. I have not gone through the expanded reading that you’re doing on this channel (though, I am working on it, recently I read Insomnia, and The Talisman, and I’m working on Black House now, so I have to finish it before watching your review, but, I loved your review of the Talisman. The point is, maybe there is some validity to the argument that reading the whole series, and coming back to The Wind Through The Keyhole, makes it a more enjoyable read.

It is not good to read this as 4.5. It's doesn't work to get double flashbacks with no quest progress. It's a much better read after the core journey is complete. On a first read you are way to eager to get on the path of the beam proper.

Get to #5 and you’ll be happier! They are all right there and they get right to it. At first….. I’m only a bit into it, but it was great to get back to the Ka-tet!

I’ve followed your journey thus far and I gotta say, I’m getting a little
nervous for you. Haha
Maybe you’re right, it’s just anticipation for the story. I think if you waited until the end then you’d like it more.
Remember, it’s not about the ending, it’s the journey.
Looking forward to your next review. Heads up: that next book does kick butt.

I agree on most of what you said, but there was some things I did enjoy in the fairy tale.
1. The old widow (who’s name I’ve forgotten) was a decent character. I liked her more than the rest of the cast of the fairy tale.
2. The scenes with the tiger.
3. Randall Flagg.
Besides that, the parts that were not fairy tale were meh. I have quite high hopes for Wolves of The Calla as well.
Great review as always!

Sounds like they're tales/stories reminiscent of King Arthur and the Knights of the Rountable. There were a bunch of stories within that main story about each knight and their personal journeys. I like stories within stories because of the tales of King Arthur lol reminds me of Beowulf a little too...sitting around a fire telling spooky stories it awesome

I don't think that Roland knew the Man in Black as Randall Flagg, but as Marten Broadcloak, it was only technically revealed that the Man in Black is definitely Randall (though it was quite obvious) when he met the Tick-Tock Man.

This book is unironically better than the last three books in the series. And I never had a problem with the end of the series.

Man, don't you think that he might have embellished the story to fit his Marjorie into the story?

WTTKH was just beautiful! Dude, where are you coming from with this review? Honestly, I don’t get it. First, it was a reunion after the main story was told. Old friends, you know what I mean? Also, it just expands the beauty and history of mid-world…what’s this rush to get to the Tower? It’s beautiful, sublime and just added to the rich tapestry that is Mid-world…
