‎ Regular salt (sodium chloride or NaCl) is one of the best aquarium medications in the world, but you must be careful to use it correctly since it does not evaporate from water. Cory explains what kinds of infections it treats, the difference between NaCl salt and other salts, and recommended dosage amounts.

Pro tip - Always mix meds in a jug of tank water before you add it to the tank. It dissolves salt and stops dosing mistakes affecting the system.

I’ve used API salt for about 8 years now. Works every time for ich, parasites, infections, and clamped fin. The tricky part is finding a balance so as to not harm the live plants.

I've been using salt to quarantine fish for almost 15 years and can say, I've never had ick or any kind of parasite issues. And when I had saltwater, I do the opposite and lower salt content.

Ok for those of you who have kitchen scales and like precision (assuming aquarium salt tbs that Cory is using weights 17 g or 0.6 oz):
Level 1 - 1.5 g per liter or 0.2 oz per gallon
Level 2 - 2.24 g per liter or 0.3 oz per gallon
Level 3 - 4.49 g per liter or 0.6 oz per gallon

Btw, if you decide to get your salt in the grocery store, avoid anticaking agent. This is a citation from Clinical Guide to Fish Medicine: ''Some salts contain anticaking agents (e.g. sodium ferrocyanide) and these must be avoided as they can be highly toxic to fish (Noga 2010a)."

Although I still have 2 freshwater tanks, I’ve started consuming mostly saltwater content to learn how to make my new reef tank thrive. I really miss watching Cory and aquarium co-op. I really wish you guys would dip a little into saltwater. There’s nobody like you on the salty side!

Wow - another amazing video for the hobby. Cory, the amount you have done not only to build the hobby, but also to make it genuinely better, is astounding. I am a firm believer in trying the least aggressive treatment techniques first, so I think this video will be another great help to many new aquarists!

I worked at a tropical fish importer for 4 years. Salt was used in every tank on arrival. Then other med's as needed. our dose was one cup per 20 breeder. With a drip running about 3 to 5 gallon pre day. We important 50 to 100 boxes a week from all over the world.

Years ago I used salt with goldfish as a preventative…never had any infections of any kind. They were very healthy.

Speaking of salt and killing bacteria, another point to add, is if you have a sore throat, mouth infection, or some other thing that’s going on with your throat and mouth using extremely salty water to gargle with is highly recommended by doctors to help kill the bacteria and prevent the need for antibiotics

I’m so happy this Christmas Eve because my Betta after being treated with aquarium salt for a few days according to the instructions on the box has finally come out to eat and to swim a bit! I couldn’t figure out which disease he had but he was definitely dying!

Thank you so much! One of my tiger barbs seem to have a tiny injury and salt has really been very helpful. I didn't know you had finer salt which would be better measuring out than my rock salt

When using salt-how long should it sit in the tank? Should I do a water change daily? Should I make sure I get rid of all the salt at some point?
