I am doing something in similar way by picking as well as tapping but tapping alone is very hard.
This man is not from this world, he is awesome and explains nicely too!

It must have something to do with his pickups because as what I can see, he only touches the strings using his right fingers lightly, and then it produces those tapping sounds. I might be wrong though.
