I think Kaido's will was incompatible with his devil fruit, as seiryu is commonly depicted as benevolent guardian deity in myth, while Kaido is a tyrannical invading conqueror. Would also explain why yamato would be closer to awakening since the Makami fruit is also a guardian deity and she wants to protect Wano.

Under this logic, Momonosuke could be closer to awakening assuming will was copied alongside the lineage factor.

Off topic, I just realized that Gear 5th can legit go into any Gear. We’re most likely gonna see a Gear 5th Version of Snakeman when he fights Kizaru. Or at least another speedster form to face Kizaru. What I like that Oda is doing with Gear 5th is that he’s using these Characters to give Luffy ideas on how to use Gear 5th better. Great point about Yamato, her cloud/smoke ring maybe an aspect of her mythical fruit rather than signs of her awakening, make perfect sense too because as much as Yamato's strong she has also been living in someone else's shadow almost her entire life, making her ill fitted to be come one with her fruit. That might be why Kaidou wanted her to become the shogun of Wano, forcing her to embrace the role of the Guardian Deity of Wano in order for her awakening, and maybe like Luffy her awakening would have other aspects (paramicia or logia) unlocked for Kaidou's plan.

The fact that kaido wasn't awakened still screams a lot about his strength. imagine if he was awakened. At this point, he's like the kenpachi of bleach. Y'all remember when kenpachi didn't have his bankai for hella episodes.

KOL is yet to point out (or remember) that Luffy got the ring before his awakening in his gear 4th form, showing that the ring appears before the full awakening. Possibly as a sign that the user is mentally ready to someday achieve a proper awakening rather than the jailer beast style awakening.

What I find interesting is that the fandom somehow puts awakenings up there as something that almost makes you better than non awakened users, but, of all the characters we have seen awakened, more than half of them lost to non awakened users. Luffy, Law and Kid are the only awakening users we've actually seen win a fight.

Edit: Let's also not forget that in Law and Kid's case it was also a 2 v 1 against a non awakened user won via battlefield removal.

I think the smoke that actually surrounds the awakening zoan is when you make the devil fruit dream come true. If devil fruits are manifestation of dreams, I think the cloud can represent dreams like sleeping on a cloud and also the awakening is a dream state. That’s why if you look really well at Luccis awakening it kinda looks like something that’s dream up in a story

The powerscalers finally getting it a little bit but just to add, another reason why I agree with Kaido not being awakened mentally was because he was an emotional drunk. you could say the drinking couldve played apart, while he still fought drunk and even had different "modes" while drinking, he was never really levelheaded enough.

Look at Luffy's training in Wano, Yeah he was a beast at using his Haki before but he really had to connect mentally in order to bring out his ACoC, and he didnt even fully grasp it until he midway through Kaido beating him down for a third time
