An example of one of many circuit-bending techniques:
Poke around on the PC board with your fingers (wet and dry) and find a place on the PC board that makes some kind of sound change. Then attach wires to the most promising points and trying different resistances.
I am using a Variometer - just a bunch of potentiometers (variable resistors) in series to try and find the best values, which I put, of course, into an old toy.
