Cutting Lawn Early Morning - Removing the Dew

What time of day to cut your lawn? In the summer heat we often want to get it done early, but the dew on the lawn makes it tough to cut. With this lawn care tip, you can cut your lawn 2-4 hours earlier by knocking off the morning dew. Cutting wet grass is not a good idea, and this helps lawns dry out fast.

I Iove the look of dew on Bermuda in the morning. It’s like a blue lawn 👌

Wish I could get my lawn to look that uniform. The previous home owners used various seeds and my grass is a melting pot of different shades of blades and plantago. Been treating it for 7 years. Nice video. Thanks for the hose tip.

PA LAWN GUY> Doc, I like to think great minds think alike. In m years of lawn care (35) I have been using a swinging motion of my leaf blower to do the same thing for early mowing. A quick pass over and after trimming with a string trimmer the grass mowing is ready to go.

Thanks for great videos, I do admit I skip through the long explanations but enjoy the rest. I was worried that the acid content of the fertilizer was going to get you in trouble with your wife. My wife would love the dish pattern.

Dew is my best friend. I have a 27" Trucut reel mower that I start cutting at daybreak every 3-4 days. By cutting at around 3/4" high, I have no clumping and the dew well defines where I have not yet cut. Also, the moisture lubricates the cut and cools the mower blades. My dedicated footwear does not get objectionably wet as the mower clears my walkpath.

How long do you wait after doing that before mowing?

Super video!
Question: How long should you wait to cut after you have knocked the dew off??
Thanks

I use a powerful backpack blower and it blows the dew off the grass into the ground.

Seeing that brings back old memories. When I first started in GC maintenance, we used long fiberglass poles to "whip" the dew off the greens. Later we "graduated" to the hose method. Worked great. One person would stand in the middle of the green with a hose end while the other attached an end to a Cushman vehicle and just drove around the perimeter. We also, on occasion, just turn on the irrigation for a couple of minutes to wash the dew off. Nice to see it being done again.

As an aside, I see what looks to be edging of beds and trees rings with Round-Up (or similar). If somebody is going to do that, I would suggest mechanical edging (first) to sever the stolons. This would stop the translocation of the herbicide to a specific point rather than just allowing it to go for who knows how long. Just a suggestion.

Good idea but i use an old fishing rod. It works a treat and its quick and ideal for the smaller lawns

Nice hack but your grass is cut short already. Come to the country and see my grass lol. I could see me pulling a water hose I’d need a 200 ft hose
