The song is really about the relationship between her and her mom

Am I the only one who understood this scene 100% as a kid? It's obvious all Tess ever wanted was her mom's approval and not to stand in her shadow, and it seems like the "mean girl" persona was actually a defense mechanism from being in her mom's shadow for years. It baffles me how Disney thought Mitchie's story was more realistic than Tess's. Mitchie was unbelieveable, shallow, and ironically even less thankful for her mom than Tess!

*I never noticed:*
*a) The autotune*
*b) How weird was Kevin and Joe´s hairstyle in this movie*
*Still, I love this song and find this scene so sad.*

I always thought the lyrics for this song were really clever. Instead of using things like "I" or "you" It's replaced with words like "us" and "we/we're" despite Tess clearly referring to herself and her mom. I always appreciated how in parts like "We can shine like the sun" the "we" can easily be replaced with "I" or even "you" and it would still make sense. It adds a layer of complexity to Tess' character if you think how she had to do this so it won't seem obvious to anyone/her mom.

I love how vulnerable Tess is here. She's putting on a great performance, then sees that her mom's not paying attention to her and completely loses her game.

Her main focus during the performance was on her mom, and that she was there to watch her, and when she saw that she wasn't watching her anymore, she lost her focus

I like that the dancers didn’t give a shit about the drama tess was always kicking up. Like they were legit just there to do a job and having been a theatre kid most of my life, I can tell you that that’s rare and fucking refreshing honestly

Her mother literally chose her career over her own daughter.

Her outfit was dope . Something I’d wear, since I own a few glittery stuff my self

I loved this song! And this scene made me understand this character on another level.
I remember I had a friend, we both liked to sing (I still do) and we wanted to start a band together called "two stars" inspired by this song. Old times

The whole mirror thing behind her, genius! She's dramatic and narcissistic, but relevant.

I actually felt bad for her during this

How did we not notice all of the autotune during the movie?

Looking at the part again I actually think the "tragedy" of her tripping and running off actually made the performance more emotional and enjoyable. If I judged it she would have won.

this is one of the most heart-wrenching moments in Disney channel history (in my opinion)
i know she's a "villian" but so was Audrey in Descendants and I felt awful for her too
