“Uyirnokkam” - A Song by Sounds of Isha | Sadhguru's Talk

Celebrate the Pongal spirit with Uyir-nokkam - a song by Sounds of Isha with Shankar Mahadevan lending his voice. The song is based on a poem written by Sadhguru, expressing how the purpose of life is life itself.

“Right now, for most people, life means their job, the new house they’re building, the car they bought, their family and so many other things. That’s not life. It is not even your body, mind, thought or emotion. Life means what’s throbbing within you. It is only because “this” is ON that everything else seems to be meaningful. If “this” stops, nothing around you will mean a damn thing to you or anyone.

And life is a purpose unto itself, it need not have another purpose. It is a big enough phenomenon. Its magnitude is too large for it to be focused on something else. It is a purpose and an end unto itself.”

#Sadhguru
Yogi, mystic and visionary, Sadhguru is a spiritual master with a difference. An arresting blend of profundity and pragmatism, his life and work serves as a reminder that yoga is a contemporary science, vitally relevant to our times.

Translation for the first few lines sung by Sadhguru 🙏🙏

Only when I perceive, you exist
If you forget me, I shall seize to exist

Only when life is blossoming, does god truly exist
When enlightenment blooms, you yourself are god

That which was just mere dirt became a flower.
But at the same time, that which was human became the dirt of the earth itself.

For the plants, flowers, and trees - the roots are the source of growth
But for your life, I am the source.

Your life does not need wealth or gold
All that you need is life to be your only purpose

The purpose of life is the life within, just the life within (Uyir Nokam, Verum Uyir Nokam)

A life that does not know of desires and anger
A life that does not know sins or entanglements

A purpose of life full of love and bliss
The purpose of life is the life within, just the life within

In the very blossoming of life is how you attain liberation (moksha)

Uyir nokkam verum uyir nokkam

Pattrum paavamum ariyadha nokkam

Anbum aanandhamum arinja nokkam

Uyir nokkam verum uyir nokkam

Uyir nokkam uyir nokkam

Uyir malarndhaal dhaan unn moksham

Written by Sadhguru ✨🔱✨

Sadhguru asked someone to volunteer to translate from Tamil to English. When she did, he gave her a really hard time teasing her left and right.
It was really very funny. Here is my attempt at the translation. As that lady mentioned, it won’t do justice to what Sadhguru wrote, but at least I’d like to try so I can understand it better myself.

Meaning:

UYIR NOKKAM – Purpose of life is life itself

Naan unardhaal dhaaney iruppen – I can be alive only if I realize the life within me

Nee marandhal naan irappen – If you forget that, I will die

Uyir malarndhaal dhaan unn iraivan – if your life blossoms, that is your divine

Arul malarndhaal nee dhaan iraivan – if grace blossoms, then you are the divine itself

Manna irundhen malar aanen – A flower blossoms from soil (dirt)

Manidhan aanavan manna anal – What happens if humans become like soil?

Malar kodikku ellam ver moolam – The life of flowers and trees is in the roots

Unn uyir malardhukku naan moolam – I am your root for your life to blossom

Unn uyirku edhukku pon selvam – Why does your life need money and wealth?

Thevai aanadhu uyir nokkam – The only thing life needs is life itself

Uyir nokkam verum uyir nokkam – Just need life

Uyir nokkam verum uyir nokkam – Just need life

Aasaiyum kovamum theriyadha nokkam – Life doesn’t know greed or anger

Pattrum paavamum ariyadha nokkam – Life doesn’t know material things or sins

Anbum aanandhamum arinja nokkam – Life only knows love and blissfulness

Uyir nokkam verum uyir nokkam – Just need life

Uyir nokkam uyir nokkam – Turn life ON

Uyir malarndhaal dhaan unn moksham – Only this your life blossoms, you’ll have moksham (liberation)
