The more popular and plausible story is that this incident happened after Mata Sati had immolated Herself. So when Mahadev had receded from the sansarik world after Mata Sati's passing, He retired to yogadhyana and solitude in the Amarnath cave. By this time Mata Parvati had been born and was of marriage age. So She happened to stumble into the Amarnath cave one fine day and saw Shiva meditating and She was mesmerized. She wanted to wake Him up but hadn't mustered the courage to do so. The Devas wanted to help because their throne of heaven was threatened by the asura king Tarakasura who had the boon that he could be killed only at the hands of the son of Shiva. So he was pretty sure that he was immortal because Shiva was a Sanyasi and had lost His wife. Anyway Indra Dev sent Kamadev and his wife Rati to aid Parvati's quest. Kama fired his floral arrows which are supposed to awaken desire inside any being. Shiva had been aware of what was going on in his surrounding. So just as the arrow was about to strike Him, He opened His third eye and incinerated Kama to nothing. Rati was heartbroken and shattered, she wept and blamed Parvati for what happened to her husband. So she cursed Parvati that Parvati will never be able to carry a child in Her womb (not that Parvati will never be a mother). That's why Kartikeya was born from the yogic union of Shiva and Shakti, Ashokasundari was born from Kalpataru tree and Vinayaka was born from the turmeric discarded from Mata Gauri's skin. So She is a mother, She just never carried Her children in Her womb.

Anyway Rati had also prayed to Mahadev to forgive her husband and bring him back. Mahadev assured Rati that Kama had only lost his physical form and was still around in his formless state. And predicted that he would be born again physically as the son to Shri Krishna and Mata Rukmini. So Parvati absorbed his formless aura into Her eyes until he could be born again. Hence Parvati became known as Kamakshi. After that Parvati decided not to win Shiva through lust, but to win Him through devotion. That's when She left Her palace and luxurious life. She gave up food, water and air to conduct the most difficult tapasya anyone could ever do. Thus She impressed Mahadeva with Her resilience and devotion and won His hand in marriage, also establishing Herself as Goddess Shakti by breaking all Her bonds with mortal life. And in Dwapara Yuga Kamadev was born as Shri Krishna and Mata Rukmini's son Pradyumna and married Mayavati who was the reincarnation of Rati.
