The Spitfire for when it was designed and flown in 1936 was way ahead of its time.. Then the P 51 was put into combat in May 1941 so for a design of of aircraft that late in the war you would have to expect it to be a bit better. The Mustang was vitally improved with the introduction of the rolls-Royce Merlin engine..

You'd be better of comparing the P-51 with the Hurricane which was more maneuverable and had a longer range than the P-51.
The Spitfire was designed and built for local dogfights over the UK.

In a dogfight the spitfire kills the p51 every single time. Reason ? Better plane better pilots. No one in the world is better than the royal airforce. Maybe by size but not by skill and planning. That’s what we brits do.
