Solving a Rational Equation with an Extraneous Solution

Watch this video to see an example of how to solve a rational equation. The good news is, we're going to eliminate the denominators pretty quickly. After figuring out what the least common denominator is (LCD), we multiply both sides by the LCD. This eliminates our denominators so we can multiply everything out and solve for the variable. One thing we always need to remember when solving a problem that started with a variable in the denominator, is to check for extraneous solutions. All this means is that you plug in your answer(s) to make sure they don't reduce down to cause there to be a zero in the denominator.
