The tanks are needed for Ukraine’s advances into Russian positions. Without them, Ukrainian forces would be exposed to Russian small arms and held in check.

Let the US supply the tank escorts and Germany supply the tanks. In modern warfare an armored attack requires about 3 Infantry Fighting Vehicles for each tank. Have the US sign that they will supply 3 Bradleys for each Leopard II supplied by Germany. The Bradleys would have anti-tank missiles and the soldiers carried by the Bradleys would have portable anti-tank missiles.

Chip Chapman's assessment of the situation is spot on! Folks, don't despair, the opportunist Scholz will give in. At worst, there is still the anti-German Polish government, which wants to get rid of its Leopard tanks anyway and will gladly give at least its used 128 Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine, which it bought from Germany in 2002 at the friendship discount price of about 100, 000 euros each, while Finland had to pay about 500, 000 euros each for its 124 2A4s in the same year. By the way, Germany also sold Poland 22 MiG-29s for 1 euro each, maybe the Poles will dare to bring them to Ukraine somehow. Peaceful Germany can then pay back the purchase price later, plus upgrades. Good luck with training the Ukrainians on the Leopard!

I hope the German government releases the transfer of Leopard tanks very soon. Europe needs to be united more than ever. Ukraine needs the tanks ASAP and the crews need training. It is also an opportunity for German industry to get the wheels of production and development turning. Putin intimidates the German government.

If the free world wants to prevent a clear genocide that's happening in front of you then that in itself is worth fighting for. Now, you add to that other geopolitical implications like making an example to current dictators and future dictators and stopping Russia from ever harming other countries for centuries to come. In my opinion battle tanks are made for “offensive and defensive” position it could withhold any territory or liberate a town or a city at any given time.
