Antigua is a beautiful place for families to gather on weekends and a perfect place to have a great time in its beautiful hotels, many foreigners come for a week and end up staying for months and even years or to live. Welcome

Mi hogar! My beautiful sweet Antigua home. I rolled into town in a tourist van all the way from the east coast of Guatemala after docking my sailboat at a marina to store it for the hurricane season in 1999 just two years after the Peace Treaty was signed, so I saw it pre commercialization.

If you go one town in any direction, the commercialization vanishes. Its all due to tourism. All those places USED to be homes and not SO long ago, back in 99. The place had a residential feel, now the property is too valuable rentwise to live in except in a few cases in the back behind storefronts. The locals move to a nearby town build a big house with their rental income and live well off rental proceeds, $20 to 75, 000 a YEAR RENT for the complete larger houses, those lucky enough to inherit places in town. Some of those owners are my friends having inherited the homes from parents or grandparents. But the old life I lived the first years of dropping into a neighbors house in the am for a cafecito and chisme ...gossip..are gone forever, sad.

Coming from sealevel that first day, I really felt the altitude and could only drag myself to a hotel. That wont happen to you if you come from the airport since the capital is at high elevation..we are at 5, 000 ft in Antigua, about a mile. And that 70 degree mornings temperature is year round pretty much, it heats to 80degrees in the sun around noon...nights can be cooler 60s or even down to 40s or 50s Dec. to Feb.

The next day it felt like I had fallen into an old Mexican Bahia town from my childhood. The traffic was as it was on the day you were here which is about 20% of pre Covid....you dont know how lucky you were...same with tourists on the streets. Its still way. down. We are coming up to Palm Sunday next Sunday, then Holy Week and the processions are curtailed somewhat. I think I will drive the short hop into town for the first time in nearly 20 years to see the alfombra making. I know in future years the mobs of tourists will be back eventually. We had no processions last year and that was VERY weird.

Feliz semana santa a todos!

I'm in Antigua right now and am disappointed that we went out of our way to come here. It's not authentic at all, it's exclusively for tourists. 95% of people walking outside are tourists. At night there's a nightclubby feel with drunk tourists stumbling around. It's a shame that this is what has happened to a heritage site, although I suppose it hails from colonialism anyway. Guatemala City was far more interesting, and I hope Lake Atitlan will be as well, with surrounding towns where locals live. If you are someone who prefers authenticity and to experience the culture and how people live, Antigua isn't the place to see. If you enjoy art and history, it isn't either. This is just tourist shops, inauthentic restaurants and hotels. I wish we had of made it just a half way stop.
