Romans 4:16-22 is incredibly encouraging. I love Psalms 119! It is a long chapter but it’s one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. One favorite verse explains how being afflicted was a good thing because it strengthened their relationship with God. Another verse asks the Lord to remember the Word upon which it caused them to hope because the Lord’s Word gives them life.

18:52 This is one of those verses that displays the absolute WONDER of God’s sovereignty. In verse 18 Joseph’s brothers (after the death of Jacob) came before him, fell on their faces, and said they were his servants. Joseph’s response in verse 19 of “am I in the place of God?” depicts that he understood very well that after all God brought him through (that he sums up in 45:1-8), God is still in His spot, God is still in His place, and God is still on His throne and it’s a place no man can, should, or ever will be in the spot of. This humility just gets depicted even more in verse 20. The moment he tells his brothers that what they did was intended and meant for evil against JUST him but God intended and meant for good for MANY people. Joseph understood that his story was not just about him but about the saving of many people’s lives through means that God sovereignly decreed.

And it’s much much bigger than we think because what line was preserved because of Joseph? Judah. Who emerged from the tribe of Judah? King David. And who descended from king David? A greater Son, who is a greater King, who is the Lion of the tribe of Judah. And the New Testament starts off with this genealogy that screams the God who made a promise in Genesis 3 of the promised Seed has fulfilled that promise through Christ. And Joseph and his afflictions were just a means by which God used to bring about His will, to preserve this Seed. How often do we try to put ourselves in God’s spot and try to figure out “why this? Why that? Why them?” When in reality, we have to ask ourselves the question Joseph asked his brothers: are we in the place of God?
