It's so interesting to find out terms and techniques for things that seemed so natural.
Thank you for sharing your insights and 'happy little accidents'.

My niece hated the toilet. It didn't matter if it was her small toilet or the adult toilet with a kids seat on it. She refused to have anything to do with it.

But she was endlessly fascinated by the dogs going outside to potty, to the point that one day she followed them out, took off her britches, and peed outside with them.

And thus began the most bizarre period of my nieces childhood. For about a month, anytime she had to go potty, she'd let the dogs out and then either follow them into the yard to pee, or move her little toilet to the porch if she needed to poo.

After about a month, she decided that was too much effort and started using the toilet inside, but boy was it a wild ride to get there.

Oh, that's a rather useful technic, cause it makes a kid much more independent from early age.

Kids can be potty trained; it’s a question of how important parents think it is. When my mom got to her 4th, she knew he understood the process but was too lazy to be bothered. She was too busy to fuss about it. When the 5th came home, he announced he wasn’t the baby now and used the toilet.

Many cultures train their babies from very early on. Many tribal people around the world don’t have extra cloth or running water. They usually hold their babies in an upright position, exposing their genitalia to the air; as soon as they start to go, the mother’s make a pissing sound.
At first, moms might miss the mark, but both mom and baby figure it out quickly.
I’m 70+ y.o.; if we weren’t trained by 10-12 months old, it was kind of considered neglectful. Of course, if there’s any kind of special needs, it’s a different story. You might check out the potty training in the Tibetan tribes.

My 3year old daughter and I were watching this together, this is the first time she has ever seen you, and she said, "I really love her." 😭💕

I love the joy in your face when you talk about your child. I mean every parent should have that joy, but it still is beautiful to see. 💜

Also where did you get that headband? I want one.😅💜

Every kid is different. Some take longer, some take to potty immediately. It's great that you found a positive way to deal with the topic.

Mine did this too! She wasn't going in her nappy as often as we would expect (even though she'd indicate that she needed to) so we went to the paediatrician, who couldn't find anything wrong with her bowls or bladder but she mentioned that she might not like her brand of diaper/it might be uncomfortable. We changed different types of diapers several times and found there was actually a pattern of her starting to go when we took her diaper off (we just thought this was parents bad luck) and so we started doing what you did, holding her over her diaper when she started getting fussy and she'd go, which then evolved into using a potty! (And then I had one who was impossible to potty train, nature likes to keep me humble 🥴)

This sounds very smart, more hygienic, and comfortable for babies who can learn this earlier on!

As someone who works with dogs (esp puppies 💕) yet hates taking care of kids for longer than 10 minutes I am always astounded at these newer or more niche parenting methods as they are so similar to how we train working dogs.

It’s why we start puppies out in the grass every 1-2 hours (increasing as they age) and keeping them in a small cleanable area beforehand where they don’t want to potty in as it would be too close to their sleeping and eating areas (same as how babies don’t like having a dirty nappy). We watch the puppy for signals of discomfort or pre-bathroom behavior (sniffing, circling, restlessness, etc.) then straight out to the yard on a leash. Once they potty they get a treat the off the leash for play time.

Eventually they start showing us those signals and can hold it for longer then we tell them to sit (know as manding) or ring the potty bell with their nose then out on a leash, cue to toilet, then reward. The sooner you set up the behavior, the easier you make it for the pup to be successful, and the clearer your communication, the easier it is! Then there’s no undoing other behaviors.

With human babies, they learn toilet means go in diaper which we then have to unteach them. It’s much easier to teach the desired behavior right off the bat than unteach unwanted behaviors. Yeah, it may take a bit more work up front to do this successfully but it ultimately makes the potty training faster.

I don’t have a child yet, but I feel like if a puppy can communicate when they need to go potty, (they can start to understand potty training at at least 8 weeks, if not earlier), so can a human child. In both cases, it just requires effort/understanding from the caregiver.

This makes so much more sense! So much more intuitive than having them do it on themselves!

EC is such a wonderful opportunity to connect with our babies! ❤

Love this! We practiced EC with our eldest and he was out of nappies at 14m in the day and 16m at night. Now doing it again with our second child and love the bond it helps to create. Children really are so much more capable than society gives them credit for!
