LDS Hymn 7: Israel, Israel, God Is Calling
In this LDS Hymn 7: Israel, Israel, God is Calling, we learn that Israel was chosen by God to be a light to the world. We are told that God is still calling the nation of Israel. As we come to understand this message, we can rejoice and worship with stronger faith. This is an inspiring and powerful song that will help us reflect upon the special promises made to the children of Israel.
Verse 1 Meaning:
Israel, the covenant people of the Lord, God is calling you out from places of grief and distress. Babylon, the symbol of all things worldly and wicked, is falling, is being destroyed. God will destroy all her symbols of strength (her towers). So come to Zion, come and be with God’s people before he unleashes, or let's lose his anger like a flood upon the people.
Verse 2 Meaning:
Israel, your God, is speaking to you. Hear or listen to the voice of him who saves you. The glorious morn refers to a new time is beginning for his chosen people. Zion here is referred to as not just the Lord’s people but also as the city of Zion, which will be built in the last days. It will be a place of safety for God’s people. There we can go and be happy within her boundaries or walls.
Verse 3 Meaning:
Israel, angels, are coming down from heaven and giving their power to mankind so we can return to God. Come to Zion because the Lord’s return is close and almost here.
Verse 4 Meaning:
This is a question and admonition or warning for God’s people. The question is, how can you stay and live in the sorrows of sin (error’s gloomy ways)? Mark (take note) how the Lord will not justify our unwillingness to return to Him. We are putting off repenting because we are vain, and there is no good reason for this.
Here is the invitation of this last verse: Come and be with the people of the covenant; come to the city of God, and the city's walls will ring with His praises.
Verse 1
Israel, Israel, God is calling,
Calling thee from lands of woe.
Babylon the great is falling;
God shall all her tow’rs o’erthrow.
Come to Zion, come to Zion
Ere his floods of anger flow.
Come to Zion, come to Zion
Ere his floods of anger flow.
Verse 2
Israel, Israel, God is speaking.
Hear your great Deliv’rer’s voice!
Now a glorious morn is breaking
For the people of his choice.
Come to Zion, come to Zion,
And within her walls rejoice.
Come to Zion, come to Zion,
And within her walls rejoice.
Verse 3
Israel, angels are descending
From celestial worlds on high,
And to man their pow’r extending,
That the Saints may homeward fly.
Come to Zion, come to Zion,
For your coming Lord is nigh.
Come to Zion, come to Zion,
For your coming Lord is nigh.
Verse 4
Israel! Israel! Canst thou linger
Still in error’s gloomy ways?
Mark how judgment’s pointing finger
Justifies no vain delays.
Come to Zion, come to Zion!
Zion’s walls shall ring with praise.
Come to Zion, come to Zion!
Zion’s walls shall ring with praise.
Text: Richard Smyth, 1838–1914
Music: Charles C. Converse, 1832–1918
