The Philippines wants to be predominantly middle class by 2024, but is this even possible with various challenges that ordinary Filipinos face?

A recent study published by the Philippine Institute of Development Studies (PIDS) in September 2024 explored the country’s goal, warning of several challenges that could impact the country’s progress.

On Friday, November 15, Rappler editor-at-large Marites Vitug speaks to Albert, PIDS senior researcher fellow and one of the study’s authors, to discuss their findings and why studies exploring the middle class sector is important.

The middle class and the OFWs need to shape up in choosing the so-called leaders of our country. Otherwise we will end up as laggards compared with our neighbors like Cambodia and Laos. Gratitude to Madam Marites Vitug and Sir Albert for this insightful discussion.

In my own opinion, a family of 5 ( father, mother, and 3 kids going to school) with a P25, 000 income is surviving/struggling in their daily living.

the way our politicians are elected says all on the status of our middle class. We all want the competent leader with sound platforms and moral integrity. but how these politcians market themselves to the electorate says that majority of them do not have an idea of who to vote.

Very interesting topic, but I am missing something. How about the saving pattern among the middle class in the Philippines? Do they save at least 10% of their income? Just curious....

we can make wealth, but it will also burn us out to death with the prices of goods here in the Philippines. By the time we get to upper middle class, either we will be too old to enjoy whatever we worked hard for or, we might be dead already by keep on working. Business would have been a good thing but the market in the Philippines is hard to penetrate. its anti small business. ....And if you want to really make money, is to have a contract with the corrupt government. That is the new wealth.

Need a nation identification that's not politicised. Sorry if we can even get that right good luck trying to effectively and efficiently track any policy efforts in citizen development. Do not use Singapore as a comparison. Everyone has an identity that's nationally managed...far more easy.
