Petra is a coastal settlement of Lesbos in the Northern Aegean.
Petra is located on the northern coast of Lesbos at an altitude of 5 meters while it is about 17 km N. from Kalloni (seat of the municipality) and 55 km NW. from Mytilini .
Mithymna , or more commonly Molyvos , is a large, exceptionally beautiful, traditional settlement of Lesvos with 1,335 inhabitants according to the 2021 census.
It is located on the northwest coast of the island, 62 km northwest of Mytilini and is the seat of the former Municipality of Mithymna , while today it belongs to the Municipality of West Lesvos . It is a very picturesque settlement, at the northern tip of the bay of the same name, over which the old fortress dominates. It has a small harbor with mainly fishing boats and tourist yachts.
In ancient times the city was called Mithymna, while at the end of the Byzantine period it acquired the name Molyvos. Its ancient name is due to Mithymna, daughter of Macareus and wife of Lepetymnos. In the long history of the city over time, both names were used. Today both apply. The first name, Mithymna , has a pre-Greek root - Pelasgian and was preserved throughout antiquity, until 1354 AD. Historical sources, such as coins - inscriptions, as well as historical references ( Thucydides : Mithymnaean khora) inform us that the Aeolian form of the name was "Mathymna" , but from the Hellenistic years the Attic form "Mithymna" definitively prevails . From the years of the rule of the Gatelouzo dynasty on the island, i.e. from 1355 AD. the name Molyvos prevails. Its origin is more likely from the Frankish name Mont d'olives – the mountain of olive trees, than from the abundant lead rocks present in the area. On the map of Lesbos, drawn in 1782 by the French Ch. Gouffier , also put Mithymna and Molyvos , confirming the route of the double name through time. In 1912 , when Lesvos was freed from the Turkish occupation, the ancient name was reinstated as official. Thus, it is referred to as the municipality of Mithymna and as Mithymna in the documents of the services, on the buses, but the same name is also used by those who are attracted by the historical dimension of the name. Nevertheless, the inhabitants, when referring to their city today, use the name Molyvos. According to Mythology, Mithymna , along with Mytilini , Antissa , Arisvi and Eresos , were children of King Macareus , who settled Lesbos. From the children of the king, the specific cities of the island got their names, which for thousands of years now live in the same places and keep the same names. Mithymna married the Thessalian hero Lesbos , who also settled the island. According to another tradition, she married the mythical hero Lepetymnos , from whom the mountain range of the same name took its name.
