A True Anti-Squirrel Bird Feeder That Works

UPDATE! I never expected to get more than 20 to 50 views. LOL Now this is at TWO MILLION! The comments are interesting and funny. Many are insulting but that where we are in the world now. Someone doesn't like something or disagrees, just use throw out an insult or go on the attack. I guess when you are insecure, it makes you feel better. Psychology 101.

It's A new twist on a squirrel-proof bird-feeder. Okay, the feeder is really designed to be a Chickadee feeder. So far, it has worked. No squirrels were hurt in spite of falling about 12 feet after failed attempts at stealing bird seed. The feeder was installed months ago, and so far no squirrel has been able to get to the seed. They jumped on and immediately slide off to the ground 12 feet below. Ouch! Flying squirrels! Okay, the "thump" is a sound effect created by my fist hitting a pillow.. So don't be concerned about a squirrel hitting granite. It's all for our entertainment...the squirrels and the birds.

I just need to clarify...I don't hate squirrels. I am amused and amazed by them. They are clever little creatures and its fun to watch them analyze situations, but bird feed is for the birds and it's not cheap, especially when it gets gobbled down by furry little pigs. They don't seem to get the concept of sharing.

They tend to be very adaptive creatures. A friend had a feeder that was being visited by the fuzzy critters, did everything to keep them from the feeder. He finally put it on a smooth steel pole with a wide angled shroud that was covered with a thin layer of grease, they just slid off on the ground when they jumped in it. One of the squirrels went up a tree that was some distance away, went out on a very slim limb and set up an oscillation on the limb. when the limb was moving up and down at a good rate he used it as a catapult to launch himself to the feeder, landed on top of the feeder and went to feasting while he looked at us watching him. They will also work in teams to overcome an obstacle.

I actually quite like watching squirrels, they're determined little critters. But they are funny too sometimes! We had a simple bird feeder in our yard that was just a greased pole. We saw many squirrels try to get up it but quickly realised that it wasn't possible. But on one occasion one particular squirrel seemed more determined than the rest. This squirrel spend a good while trying, and the more it tried the more agitated it got, its tail started twitching more and more, and it began chattering furiously! By the end it was totally demented and started bombing it around the yard attacking any birds that were close enough! I've never seen anything so funny in my life, I wish I'd got it on video!😂

This squirrel-proof bird feeder is genius. It’s actually quite attractive.
It’s so nice to see that there actually can be a bird-feeder the squirrels can’t get to. I’ve been watching “squirrel vs bird-feeder” videos for two weeks and the squirrel has always won in the end. Thank you for the inspiration that we can feed our birds without feeding the pesky little squirrels too.

A red pizza pan in front of a bird feeder might be affective but it's an eye sore. It's not enough to just keep them out of the bird feeders. Where I live these squirrels breed like rabbits and their numbers will get way out of hand quickly if they are not kept in check. They will also start to invade my attic where they will inflict all kinds of damage. I use a .25 caliber air rifle to handle the task. They also make a tasty free meal.

I've watched squirrels destroy two different supposedly squirrel proof feeders. Acrobatics, and much entertainment ensued. One the rodent bounced off a window to get the proper trajectory to reach the feeder. At that point although the squirrels weight closed the feeder, it wrapped its body around the cylinder of the feeder, and proceeded to chew its way through the sides of the cylinder. Which then collapsed, and seeds galore. On another which had no place to perch, it leaped of a ledge, twisted sideways, and then drop kicked the feeder until it was upside down. Broken feeder on the ground. Again there was many seeds, and there was much rejoicing in squirrel town!

I've seen plenty of squirrel videos on YouTube and it always amazes me how tenacious they get over free food. You can practically see their little heads smoking as they try and puzzle their way past obstacles. They are surprisingly smart sometimes!

Your creativity is only second to your sense of humour. Great idea and great video.

He's doing the squirrel equivalent of when you go to the fridge, find there's nothing to eat but then come back to the same fridge expecting things to change, like maybe finding a chocolate cake magically appeared.

I did not expect the "confused math squirrel" bit, that was unexpectedly hilarious.

I had a large platform feeder on a metal pole with a squirrel baffle that worked great but I also had a squirrel feeder that utilized a large glass jar that I put a handful or two of raw peanuts in the shell into it and the backyard entertainment value went up by a factor of at least 10. Birds are beautiful, squirrels are entertaining.

You had those squirrels questioning their abilities entirely. They can jump from flimsy tree branches to flimsier tree branches, but navigating some PVC pipe was too much 🤣

"No animals were hurt during the production of this video"... with the exception of a few bruised squirrel egos 😂

You are lucky, , , our squirrels can easy jump to the feeder!

I had a "squirrel proof" feeder once. The type with a bar that closes the feeder at a certain weight. Squirrel climbed the pole, reached around and grabbed the bar closing the feeder. With his feet still on the pole, got the bar under his arm and pushed up opening the feeder. Just grabbed a handful and ate it. Pushed up, grab seed, eat. Repeat.

I built something like this a few years ago, except it was mounted on line, not pipe, the kind of line that is used to hang laundry. It was really the same idea, with the pipes turning and a round plate. After a month or so, I ended up seeing a successful squirrel jump 5 feet over the turning pipes and the plate, and land on the wire, which he couldn't see until he jumped. He was the only one in the yard who could do this, but then he did it every day without any problem. The line was attached on one side to a tree, on the other side it was a stake with a rosebush that grazed all around. Very effective against animals. And funnily enough, the squirrel had a kind of ritual before jumping. He would go back and forth on the line, and when he made up his mind, he would hug the tree for 2 seconds and then run and jump.

Well I love the vid. Squirrels are smart and determined little fur balls. They do make great entertainment when people build puzzles for them to solve. Thank you for the show.

My mother used to put out bird feeders and only one ever was truly squirrel proof. Alas it was not bear proof. It was amazing the amount of damage that bear did to that feeder as it was of sturdy metal construction.

Just set up a challenging (yet achievable) squirrel feeder in the opposite corner of the yard.
