Cruyff is the only player from the 70s that doesn't look out of place in today's football. Grew up watching this guy and he was simply beautiful to watch.

The best playmaker I've ever seen. He knitted everything together from every area of the pitch. Easily up there with Di Stéfano, Pelé, Maradona, Messi, as the best ever.

As a player: amazing individual artist. As a manager I would argue that his philosophy of positional play ironically removed all of the individual expression from modern football.

"Cryff turn" never heard that before - but it was my own #1 move, and it caught even much better players out again and again. Great player - and fair, a huge quality in itself.

It's true that Cruyff's skill level was spectacular and he was a pleasure to watch. But notice how this Swedish team was robust and they wouldn't give them an inch. I remember how on every cross the Swedes often had two players on the Dutch player going for the header. The Swedes did not have the skill level this Dutch team had, but defensively they did not give them remotely as much space as these other teams did they played on their way to the final.
